Thus far this season, the Lions' rushing attack has been inconsistently productive, and has failed to live up to preseason expectations.

The Lions are averaging just 3.8 yards per rushing attempt, good for 18th in the NFL.

And now that No. 1 back Kerryon Johnson is out for the foreseeable future, other running backs on the roster will have the opportunity to step up and fill the void.

Rookie Ty Johnson, along with J.D. McKissic and Paul Perkins, will be used in a "running back-by-committee," according to Lions head coach Matt Patricia.

Johnson, a sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, has recorded 23 carries for 83 yards through six games this season.

His most productive performance came at home in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Chargers when he rushed five times for 30 yards.

Johnson was asked Wednesday for his reaction to Kerryon being placed on injured reserve.

"Hate to see it, (as) he is one of my guys," Johnson said. "I care about him a lot as a person, also. You hate to see something like that happen, just with all the work he has put in. Just making sure he is okay."

In the NFL, there are times when your number is called due to a teammate being injured. It represents an opportunity to showcase your skills.

"We have a great running back room, with J.D. (McKissic) and Paul (Perkins)," Johnson said. "It is an opportunity for everyone in the room, not just myself. It's next man up, so regardless, if that's me, J.D, Paul or anyone. Next man up. If your number is called, let's go."
