Will the Panthers Trade Brian Burns? Rumors Are Swirling

Carolina appears to be ready to part ways with its most valuable asset.

Transformation of the Carolina Panthers' roster is well underway on the first day of the legal tampering period.

The club agreed to terms on a five-year, $100 million deal with offensive guard Robert Hunt, parted ways with safety Vonn Bell, and watched Frankie Luvu sign a three-year deal with the Washington Commanders.

There will be more moving parts over the next couple of days, but right now all of the attention is on star pass rusher Brian Burns.

Last week the Panthers placed the franchise tag on Burns after having tabled contract negotiations at the beginning of March. Most assumed that Burns would play under the franchise tag and that the two sides would eventually get a deal worked out.

Instead, it appears that Carolina is on the verge of trading Burns to the New York Giants.

Connor Hughes of SNYtv first reported the Giants as a potential trade destination and then just a few minutes later, Sheena Quick of FOX Sports reported that Burns will be a Giant, "barring a last minute, complete breakdown in negotiations."

If a trade were to go down, the Panthers will likely net a couple of day two picks. The Giants hold the 6th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and they'd be out of their mind to include that in the trade.

Here is the full list of picks the Giants hold in 2024:

RD 1: Pick 6

RD 2: Picks 39 & 47

RD 3: Pick 70

RD 4: Pick 106

RD 5: Pick 140

RD 6: Pick 182
