Panthers Place Franchise Tag on Brian Burns

Carolina's star pass rusher will play on a one-year deal.

The day we all knew was coming has finally arrived. They waited until deadline day, but it's official - the Carolina Panthers have placed the franchise tag on linebacker Brian Burns, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

This is a one-year offer that will be worth $24 million. Although the tag keeps Burns from officially hitting the open market without restriction, it doesn't necessarily guarantee that he will be in a Panther uniform in 2024.

Last week at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, GM Dan Morgan stated that "all options are on the table" in regards to Burns' future. If they feel it's inevitable that a long-term deal won't get worked out, they can still trade him. Burns is also able to negotiate with other teams but the Panthers will have the right to match the offer. If they decide not to match an offer from another club and Burns signs elsewhere, the Panthers will receive two first round picks.

The two-time Pro Bowler is responsible for 246 tackles, 95 QB hits, 59 tackles for loss, 46 sacks, 13 passes defended, eight forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries in his five years with the Panthers.
