Money Saved Will Help Raiders Elsewhere

General Manager Tom Telesco has done a masterful job so far at spending wisely in free agency. The ability to save money at critical positions will bolster the roster elsewhere.

Since arriving in town, new General Manager Tom Telesco of the Las Vegas Raiders has made some critical decisions. Some moves are apparent, such as signing defensive lineman Christian Wilkins and letting running back Josh Jacobs walk in free agency.

However, more important than any of the Raiders' signings so far, deciding how to spend their money wisely has been the most significant move of Telesco's young tenure as general manager of the Raiders.

Historically, teams have spent the most money on their skill positions, specifically quarterback, wide receiver and running back, but Telesco has effectively made two of those positions the lowest-paid positions on the Raiders' roster.

So far, Telesco has decided against bringing in a big name at quarterback and will let quarterbacks Aidan O'Connell and Gardner Minshew battle each other, possibly adding a third quarterback via the NFL Draft for the starting position.

The Las Vegas Raiders have minimal money tied into their quarterback and running back positions.

Whether through the NFL Draft or finding a third quarterback through free agency, Telesco has decided not to overspend on the quarterback position since O'Connell has shown the ability to play well for the team, and Minshew has proven he can either be a competent starter or backup in the National Football League.

The departure of the team's star running back, Jacobs, means the team is taking a similar approach to running backs Zamir White, Ameer Abdullah, and a third running back yet to be named will collectively handle the team's carries this season and possibly into the future.

Similar to the quarterback position, the two players the Raiders currently have at running back have proven capable of handling the load. Adding a third, affordable back to the fold via free agency or the draft will give the Raiders multiple players at a team-friendly rate at two of the most critical positions on the field.

The beauty of those moves is that although Telesco has saved money on the quarterback and running back positions, but it doesn't mean he won't spend the money. This is evident from the massive contract Wilkins received.

Telesco has shown that he knows how to save the team money and how to spend their money wisely. Both are important when rebuilding a roster.
