Is Rams' New Secondary an Improvement Over 2023?

The signing of Tre'Davious White could be a massive upgrade for the Los Angeles Rams.

In an attempt to overhaul their weakest defensive group from last season, the Los Angeles Rams recently signed a trio of players meant to do just that.

On Tuesday, the Rams signed former Buffalo Bills corner Tre’Davious White to a one-year, $8.5 million deal. That addition, on the heels of inking former Washington Commanders' safety Kamren Curl and ex-Jacksonville Jaguars corner Darious Williams to deals, should shore up the Los Angeles secondary for new defensive coordinator Chris Shula at least for the short term.

Last season, the team was a little less aggressive with secondary moves despite trading Jalen Ramsey and losing safeties Taylor Rapp and Nick Scott and corner Troy Hill to free agency. The Rams signed corner Ahkello Witherspoon late in the summer before adding safety John Johnson in camp, and both were regular contributors.

But Witherspoon and Johnson are free agents and not expected to return in 2024.

Los Angeles drafted Derion Kendrick and Cobie Durant in the later rounds of last year's NFL Draft, and both should add depth behind White and Williams this season.

White appeared in just four games last season before going down to an Achilles injury but contributed 12 tackles with 10 solo and 1 for loss along with a quarterback hit and an interception. Curl played in 16 contests for Washington in 2023, tallying 115 total tackles with 74 solo and three for loss with three quarterback hits and a forced fumble.

Williams contributed in all 17 games for the Jags last year and registered 53 total tackles with three for loss to go along with four interceptions including a pick-6.
