'Excited For It!' Rams QB Carson Wentz Eager to Be in Starting Role on Sunday

Los Angeles Rams backup quarterback Carson Wentz will step into the starting role for his team on Sunday.

With a playoff berth clinched, the Los Angeles Rams have elected to rest starting quarterback Matthew Stafford this week against the San Francisco 49ers, and backup Carson Wentz will be taking snaps on Sunday.

Wentz has previous experience as a starting quarterback in the NFL, but while serving as a backup in L.A. this season, he has enjoyed the ride. Wentz spoke with the media on Wednesday where he discussed his emotions ahead of this week's start and his overall role on the team.

“Obviously, it’s a different role for me, and it’s been new in that regard," Wentz said, "but it’s been a lot of fun working with Matthew and seeing kind of how he goes about his business. It’s a very young coaching staff, and that’s been really fun to be a part of. It’s a very different scheme than what I’m used to, all those things. So for me, it’s just been all about learning and just accumulating knowledge within this system and just being ready to help, so I’ve enjoyed it.”

Now after serving as a backup for weeks, Wentz will have his chance to help his team on the field this week when the Rams travel to face the 49ers, a team that is also resting many of its starters with the NFC's No. 1 seed clinched.

“We’ll see how the week goes with all of that on their end as well, but I’m excited for it,” Wentz said. “I’ve played a couple of times down there in San Fran and it’s a fun environment. It’s going to be hopefully a beautiful Sunday afternoon in California... I haven’t played a game in a long time, so I’m excited for it.”

Kickoff on Sunday between Los Angeles and San Francisco is scheduled for 1:25 p.m. PT, and the game will be televised on FOX.
