Should Rams Sign Newly Cut Bills Ex-Safety Jordan Poyer?

If neither Jordan Fuller nor John Johnson III re-sign in free agency, the Los Angeles Rams will have a big need at safety.

With the beginning of the NFL's free agency period just days away, teams are making moves to free up as much cap space as possible. One of those teams is the Buffalo Bills, who just released veteran Jordan Poyer.

In a move that will clear up $5.7 million in cap space for the Bills, the one-time first-team All-Pro is once again a free agent after re-signing with Buffalo last offseason. And though he is on the wrong side of 30, at 32 years old, Poyer will surely attract interest from teams around the league, including possibly the Los Angeles Rams

With Jordan Fuller and John Johnson III set to join Poyer on the free agent market, the Rams are left without their starting safeties from this past season. This is undoubtedly problematic, considering the 26-year-old Fuller is expected to be among the top safeties available this offseason.

And while losing Fuller, who is coming off one of his best years as he totaled 94 tackles, eight passes defended, three forced fumbles, and a trio of interceptions, Poyer would make for a good consultation prize.

The 32-year-old would give the Rams a multi-time Pro Bowler on the back end of their defense. He was an integral cog in the Bills' secondary for over seven seasons before his release.

Although Poyer is coming off a down year, where he didn't record a single interception for the first time since 2016, this could prove especially useful for the Rams in terms of a potential contract.

With over $40 million in cap space this season, Rams general manager Les Snead has stated he'd like to be "aggressive." While signing Poyer could be considered an "aggressive" move, they likely won't want to give him a big deal.

However, considering Poyer's deal to return to the Bills last offseason was a two-year, $12 million contract, the 32-year-old may be willing to take a discount to help the Rams chase a Super Bowl.
