Buccaneers, Liam Coen Hire Former Sean McVay Understudy, Los Angeles Rams Coach

Former Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Liam Coen brought another ex-Rams coach with him to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, though this one won't hurt Los Angeles.

The story of the Los Angeles Rams’ offseason, at least so far, has been the exodus of the coaching staff. The parity forces that help keep the NFL (somewhat) cyclical have come for the Rams, who exceeded nearly every expectation in 2023.

Head coach Sean McVay is no stranger to having his coaching staff picked apart. It’s part of life as one of the sport’s brightest minds.

On Wednesday, news broke that former Los Angeles offensive coordinator Liam Coen – holding the same position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – would hire former Rams offensive line coach Kevin Carberry to his staff.

Carberry will be Tampa Bay’s offensive line coach, re-filling a staff that lost members after 2023 offensive coordinator Dave Canales left to lead the Carolina Panthers.

This time around, however, the move is only an indication of the Rams’ influence around the league and not a notice to hire more coaches. Both Coen and Carberry were last on the staff during the 2022 season – Los Angeles’ Super Bowl hangover. Coen took over coordinator duties for Kentucky in 2023, while Carberry spent a season as the New Orleans Saints’ assistant offensive line coach.

Per Pro Football Focus, New Orleans ranked 26th in pass protection and 25th in run blocking with Carberry on the staff.

Before his two-year stint with Los Angeles (2021 to 2022), Carberry added both collegiate and professional experience to his resumé. After four seasons bouncing between the NFL and two semi-pro leagues as a defensive lineman – both at home and abroad – Carberry started his coaching career as the defensive coordinator and special teams coach of St. Ignatius College Prep.

He made them jump to Kansas for three seasons before spending the 2012 and 2013 seasons as Stephen F. Austin’s defensive end coach. He would spend the rest of his coaching career (to date) on the offensive side of the ball.

Carberry was an offensive assistant for the Dallas Cowboys before joining Washington for another two seasons. He returned to the college ranks in 2018, spending three seasons with Stanford as the run-game coordinator and offensive line coach.

During Carberry’s first season in Los Angeles, the Rams won the Super Bowl, and PFF ranked the team’s pass blocking as the best in the sport. He’ll look to bring similar success to Tampa Bay.
