Steelers Named Landing Spot J.J. McCarthy
PITTSBURGH -- J.J. McCarthy to the Pittsburgh Steelers? The National Champion quarterback is climbing up NFL Draft boards after an impressive NFL Combine, and CBS Sports believes he could be the perfect match for a new offense in Pittsburgh.
Ranking the top five landing spots for the first-round quarterback, CBS Sports named the Steelers as the third-best fit, trailing just the Los Angeles Rams and Atlanta Falcons.
"The hiring of Arthur Smith as offensive coordinator makes me think McCarthy could be a good fit in Pittsburgh. Some view Smith as an offensive coach who couldn't get the most out of his top weapons in Atlanta, but what we do know about Smith is that he can build a legitimate rushing attack. The Atlanta Falcons' ground game ranked ninth last year, and third in 2022. During his time as the offensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans, Smith's rushing attack ranked No. 2 in the league in 2020, and No. 3 in 2019," CBS Sports writes.
It's tough to imagine McCarthy falling to the Steelers at No. 20, but if he did, it'd be very interesting to see if they made a move for another first-round quarterback. Pittsburgh has been linked to a few trades, moving up in the opening round, so all cards are on the table about when they actually select on Draft Night.
McCarthy bulked up to 219 pounds after being just under 200 during his college career. He did not meet with the Steelers at the NFL Combine but has been named a fit for them on numerous occasions.
Pittsburgh typically attends Michigan's Pro Day, where they'll likely speak with McCarthy and discuss this potential fit.
