NASHVILLE - Legendary Houston Chronicle NFL columnist John McClain nailed it on Wednesday when he asked the question, "Who is Lloyd Howell," in a tweet on social media.

Llyod Howell, who was unknown by their writer, and most of the football work on Monday, now finds himself the newly elected executive director of the NFL Players Association, replacing DeMaurice Smith, who stepped down after 15 years at the helm of the players association.

According to an article by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Howell is the former Chief Operating Officer of tech industry mogul Booz Allen Hamilton.

"So what is Booz Allen Hamilton? A publicly-traded company, it described itself as follows in the press release announcing Howell’s retirement : “For more than 100 years, military, government, and business leaders have turned to Booz Allen Hamilton to solve their most complex problems. As a consulting firm with experts in analytics, digital solutions, engineering, and cyber, we help organizations transform. We are a key partner on some of the most innovative programs for governments worldwide and trusted by its most sensitive agencies. We work shoulder-to-shoulder with clients, using a mission-first approach to choose the right strategy and technology to help them realize their vision.”

Now Howell begins a new career where neither he nor most of the players he will represent know much of each other, but that won't last long.

As for Smith, who walks away having been the most successful director of the players union in its history. It was Smith who helped negotiate the current collective bargaining agreement in 2020 and gained his players from 48% to 48.5% of the league’s total revenues with that deal. It helped push the salary cap to $224.8 million per team this season and beyond that in 2024.

Smith was a force for the players, and he leaves Howell with big shoes to fill, and we all need to become familiar with his name.
