NY Islanders Face Massive Issue With Challenging Cap Situation

With free agency set to kick off, the New York Islanders would like to make some improvements, but doing so will be a challenge.
Following the NHL Draft, the Islanders will now be switching their focus to free agency. New York is coming off an interesting year, and the team will be seeking to improve and hopefully be able to make the playoffs.
The Islanders came close last season to competing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but even with the late hiring of Peter DeBoer, they ultimately fell short. However, there are some really positive things in place for the team, led by the emergence of star rookie Matthew Schaefer.
Now, with their new coach already in place and a new star on the rise, the Islanders must try to have a strong offseason to put this team in the best position to succeed. However, that might be easier said than done with the cap space for the team currently being at just about $6 million. Unfortunately, that is not a strong number for the team to be at, and it is going to be a major issue that will need to be addressed.
Cap Space Is Major Issue
Due to the Islanders having some needs and not a lot of cap space, improving is going to be a challenge. When looking at the roster, the clear need for the team is to improve in the scoring department. New York only had one 30-goal scorer last year, and that was Bo Horvat. Furthermore, it was their talented rookie defenseman who came in second on the team in goals.
This is certainly a major concern for the team and one that they would like to address. However, in order to do so, they need cap space, and that is something that they don’t currently possess. While free agency isn’t likely going to be the answer for the Islanders, even on the trade market they will need room to maneuver.
The Islanders have some bad contracts on the books currently with veteran forwards, Brayden Schenn and Ondrej Palat each making at least $6 million for next season. New York would certainly like to improve their top six, but doing so seems like it could be a massive challenge.
Mathieu Darche did inherit some of these contracts, but he also took some of them on. Now, the Islanders are left without much flexibility, and the team will have to try and find a way to move some players before they can upgrade.
