Max Verstappen has put in the fastest time during the first free practice session of the Austin Grand Prix weekend.

Following the Red Bull driver on the timesheets were Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton who put in the second and third fastest times, respectively.

The Circuit of the Americas is host to another sprint race weekend making the Free Practice session even more important for the teams, especially for Daniel Ricciardo making his return after his wrist break and Oscar Piastri who has not raced on the circuit before.

Aston Martin ran into trouble with both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll's brakes, so the mechanics got to work on taking apart the AMR23, giving the two drivers even less time to practice. Alonso was later able to rejoin the session, however, Stroll was not.

A number of the cars were struggling with track limits at Turn 9 including Oscar Piastri, who had a close call after losing control and going off the track, and Lewis Hamilton.
