Nyck de Vries, the AlphaTauri driver that's been coming under a little fire recently, encountered a major obstacle on his way to his employer's factory in Faenza yesterday. As he was driving through the Emilia Romagna region, he found himself trapped in a village due to road cut-offs caused by landslides and debris. The situation became even more complicated when heavy rains intensified the flooding in Faenza, forcing this weekend's Grand Prix to be cancelled.

Sharing his experience on Instagram, de Vries posted images of his car parked on a road covered with debris and deep water. Some beautiful human beings were doing their best to clear the roadways, but despite their efforts, de Vries realised he needed more help. Fortunately, McLaren came to his aid during this challenging situation.

He posted the following to Instagram:

“Tuesday evening 11:30 pm, on my way to Faenza ahead of a marketing day at the SAT factory on Wednesday.

“It’s raining intense, Faenza is already flooded and I am unable to get to my hotel. Returning to the highway is no option either.

“Stuck in a little village with one fully booked hotel. Fortunately, McLaren got stranded there earlier and their front jack Frazer was kind enough to give me his room.

“The following morning, the hotel lobby turned into an emergency shelter for people who were forced to escape their homes during the night. Post F1 announcement, I only saw one potential option to get home, which was driving via Firenze.

“After an adventurous drive through the mountains, thanks to the help from local people and authorities in different villages, I finally got home safely.

“Thank you to every single person who has been kind enough to help me. It was truly heartwarming to see so many look out for each other. My thoughts are with those who continue to be affected by this tragedy. I’ll be back soon in Faenza to meet my team and the people from the region! Forza”

On Wednesday, local authorities met with Formula 1 officials to discuss the situation. They decided to cancel the upcoming Grand Prix in order to prioritise rescue and clean-up operations for the local emergency services. This decision allowed the authorities to focus entirely on providing support to the affected areas without the added complications of hosting a major sporting event and dealing with heavy traffic.

While de Vries faced difficulties, his AlphaTauri teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, managed to reach Faenza. Tsunoda shared images on social media, revealing the extent of the damage caused by the flooding. Deepwater, mud, and debris had engulfed the streets of the town, illustrating the severity of the situation.

As the region continues to recover from the landslides and flooding, efforts are underway to restore normalcy and provide assistance to those in need. The Formula 1 community stands
