Former F1 champion Damon Hill has come under fire from fans after his comments about Max Verstappen following the Azerbaijan sprint race this afternoon.

Verstappen has been fuming over George Russell coming into contact with him at the beginning of the sprint race. The pair had a heated discussion following the race, which Verstappen finished in third place for when the Dutchman called Russell a "d***head".

During various post-race interviews, Verstappen continued to complain about the damage caused to his Red Bull from the contact. He said:

“No, it’s not clarified. I just don’t understand why you need to take so much risk on Lap 1.

“He understeered into my sidepod, created a hole. We all have cold tyres, it’s all easy to lock up…but you know, his beautiful way of explaining ‘oh mate, you know, I locked up, oh look at the board’…. well, it doesn’t make sense, but it’s fine.

“We still got into P3, got some good points, but it is what it is.

“There’s a hole in the sidepod. It doesn’t look that great, but it is what it is and we’ll concentrate on tomorrow.”

During the Sky Sports F1 coverage of the race, Hill commented on Verstappen's complaints branding the two-time champion a "sore loser", which has not gone down well with fans. Hill explained:

"Max's comments about scrapping the Sprint shootout and Sprint are hallmarks of a 'sore looser'.

"He should be thinking about tomorrow and putting the race behind him."

Fans have hit out at the former champion, one commented:

"How an earth have @SkySportsF1 decided to keep Damon Hill on their coverage is beyond me. He offers no real or recent insight and he clearly hates Max Verstappen"

Another fan posted to Twitter:

"As much as Max has been vocal today and his comments should rather be reserved, for Damon Hill to call him a sore loser is disappointing especially since it was on live tv.

"His evident dislike for Max must be addressed."
