Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz has called on the FIA and F1 to make a dramatic change to the Monaco Grand Prix after the chaotic race weekend.

The qualifying session for the race on the streets of Monte Carlo was one of the most exciting fans have seen this year with Max Verstappen snatching pole position from Fernando Alonso with an insane third sector at the last second.

A big issue for the drivers during the session was the traffic on the short and tight circuit. Sainz has called for a change to be made to reduce this issue, similar to the format used for F2 and F3 in Monaco. He explained after the session:

“Q1 is too much.

"And I think with these wide cars and everything it’s too dangerous, and we should find a way to split into 10 cars the qualifying.

“One team each, and I’m pretty sure that that would facilitate all the mess that we saw in Q1.”

After topping the time sheets in Free Practice One on Friday, the Spanish driver qualified to start from fifth position on the Sunday. Although after his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc was handed a 3-place grid penalty for impeding Lando Norris in the tunnel, he moved up to start from fourth.

After the chaotic race with rain with roughly twenty minutes to go, Sainz finished in eighth behind Pierre Gasly in seventh and ahead of Lando Norris in ninth. The Ferrari driver had some complaints about a few of the strategical choices from the Maranello-based squad over the weekend, but has since apologised for his team radio outburst.

Sainz is now heading into his home race with the Spanish Grand Prix set to take place this coming weekend, on 2 - 4 June.
