F1 News: Carlos Sainz Faces Huge Issue As Qatar Race Touch And Go For Ferrari

It's been confirmed by journalists on the ground that Carlos Sainz's Ferrari is damaged with a fuel leak. Merely a couple of hours ahead of the race, this could be touch and go for The Scuderia as they race to repair the SF23.
Key Takeaways
- Unexpected Hurdle: Carlos Sainz's Ferrari encounters a critical fuel leak, jeopardizing his participation just hours before the race, amidst a weekend already marred by struggles and a P12 starting position.
- Qualifying Woes: Despite a promising P2 in the initial practice session, Sainz experienced a challenging qualifying, grappling with balance issues and a notably loose rear, ultimately failing to progress to Q3.
- Team Implications: The potential non-participation or hindered performance of Sainz, coupled with his existing starting challenges, could adversely impact Ferrari's pursuit to gain ground on Mercedes in the team standings, where they currently trail by 26 points.
The Spanish driver has struggled so far this weekend despite him finishing P2 behind Max Verstappen in the first and only practice session of the sprint format weekend. But he found qualifying surprisingly difficult, with him starting P12 on the grid later today after not reaching Q3.
“I had a very difficult quali, right from the beginning,” Sainz admitted yesterdayt. “Just struggling with the balance. The rear was very, very loose, while in FP1, I managed to switch on the tyres and get decent grip on this new surface.
“When the track [temperature] dropped this afternoon, I just couldn’t find any grip out there, so I just struggled quite heavily, so I’m not surprised to be out in Q2.
“Hopefully we can turn it around for tomorrow, the Sprint, and have a better Saturday,” he continued. “But definitely Sunday’s going to be tricky, starting from so far back in a difficult track to overtake. But my main focus now is to try and see what we can do better tomorrow.”
On top of this, drivers have had to mentally tackle the issues stemming from tyre issues, necessitating an 18-lap maximum on a single set of tyres. Now, Sainz may not even start the race, as his #55 car springs what is assumed to be a fuel leak.

This is not good news. Let's pray they resolve the issue before the start. If we only have one car I don't think we'll catch Mercedes in the championship.

Ahora mismo su participación en la carrera no está segura. Si es una fuga en el depósito es difícil de reparar en tan poco tiempo. Mecánicos trabajando a fondo. https://t.co/cHXA2h05RS

According to Albert Fabrega, a journalist attending the Qatar Grand Prix, Ferrari are doing their best to repair the car, but can't confirm that the driver will be in the race. This will make it very difficult for the team to catch Mercedes, with the Italian team currently 26 points behind the Brackley Squad.
