David Croft has been offering quite a few suggestions lately to make Formula One a better sport. Just recently, he spoke about how the Sprint Race format could be made into a separate championship in itself. This time though, the Sky F1 commentator insists on the deletion of complicated and unnecessary rules from the sport.

Croft called for a simplification of the rules in a rant against the FIA for forming them in the first place. He said that rules like the waving of the Blue flag are not necessary because naturally, the fast driver would how to pass a slow driver and there would be no need to caution anybody.

And the best part is you wouldn't need additional investment to get rid of it. It is as simple as keeping away the Blue flag for good. Adding to it, he said that none of the other motorsport categories have Blue flags but Formula 1 has a sense of tradition and heritage so deep-rooted that they wouldn't want to upset it even if it meant doing away with something like a flag.

He told the Sky F1 podcast:

“I think a simplification of the rules, because they’re getting a bit too complicated, we need to find a way to simplify it and just put the show first.

"Ban blue flags, because, if you’re good enough to be leading a race, you’re good enough to pass another driver not leading the race because they’re last without them having to jump out of the way – it might make things a lot more interesting as well.

"You could do that without any investment in the sport, without any engineering challenges whatsoever. That’s a masterstroke, a stroke of a flag, waving a flag, you could get rid of something that I just think is unnecessary.

"Other motorsport categories don’t have blue flags. But it’s difficult, we have a tradition and heritage in Formula 1 that you don’t want to upset too much."

Similarly, Croft also talks about moving the Sprint race before the weekend because many F1 fans don't like it. He insisted on making just these tiny changes and then leaving the sport alone because it is a great show that people love watching. He said:

"Because there are a fair amount of fans who don’t like the Sprints at all.

“But, maybe, if you had the Sprint at the start, then the rest of the weekend is a Grand Prix weekend, that might overcome that a little bit, and then try not to tinker too much, because, by and large, we’ve got a really good spectacle.”
