The inner workings and decisions of the Mercedes Formula 1 team have recently been a topic of interest with Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft who has expressed concerns about the driving force behind the team's engineering strategy.

Earlier in the year, Lewis Hamilton candidly shared his frustrations regarding the design of the W14, highlighting that he had previously flagged issues with the car to Mercedes. His sentiments were not without result, as a revamped version of the car made its debut at the Monaco Grand Prix. However, while the adjustments initially seemed to bring success, the car's overall performance did not show as much of a performance increase as the team had hoped.

Croft's main query is where the influence for these changes originates: Is it from the drivers or the engineering team? He states, as quoted by PlanetF1:

“I worry with Mercedes who’s wagging these engineering changes?

“Is the engineering team saying we need to be changing our concept, or is it pressure from those in the cockpit from Lewis [Hamilton] and from George [Russell]?

“Lewis is a vastly experienced racing driver and George has got plenty of experience himself, but you want the engineering team to be driving it because they understand engineering and design and aerodynamics way more than the drivers ever will.

“But I just worry that the changing concept, did it come from the cockpit or did it come from back at base?”

Compounding the uncertainty are the staffing changes at Mercedes. Key team members like James Vowles and performance director Loic Serra have embarked, or are embarking, on new journeys. Croft points out that such transitions are not uncommon for dominant forces in any sport, hinting at the cyclical nature of success.

“They’re losing staff, Loic Serra is heading off to Ferrari and they’ll miss him, and there have been others that have gone as well.

“We often see this that dynasties dissipate after a while, and that group of men and women that came together to create such an amazing dynasty at Mercedes have ticked past midnight and are we starting to wane just a little bit now?

“If finishing second in the championship is waning just a little bit then Checo Perez is really going to be worried.

“But there are eight other teams who would love to be in Mercedes position. But Mercedes don’t want to be racing for second. But you know that every good thing has to come to an end, and Mercedes dominance has very much come to an end. It’s how they readjust their mindset from here on in.”
