Formula One fans have been raging on social media following the latest rumour of an additional US street race in New York City, with one fan in particular branding it a "gimmick".

In 2017, Liberty Media took over Formula 1, with Chase Casey as chairman and CEO. Since then, the organisation has aimed to expand F1's presence in the United States, targeting three key cities: Miami, Las Vegas, and New York. With Miami and Las Vegas already hosting Grand Prix events, New York City is the next target. Casey confirmed this intention during a conversation with Martin Brundle of Sky Sport in Las Vegas, emphasising the importance of these cities for F1's growth.

However, the selection of a suitable location in New York City is a point of contention. F1 group CEO Stefano Domenicali prefers Central Park, a major tourist attraction, for its minimal impact on road traffic and its scenic value. In contrast, New York City Mayor Eric Adams suggests Randalls and Wards Islands, known for their sports fields and parks and offering striking skyline views. This suggestion, however, deviates from Domenicali's vision of a city-centre race. The final decision on the location remains unresolved, but the commitment to bringing F1 to New York City is clear, and discussions are ongoing to find a mutually agreeable solution.

Taking to social media platform Reddit, fans have given their verdict to the latest possible addition to the F1 calendar. One fan hit out at the increasing number of street races, which has been a popular complaint from fans in recent years. They wrote:

"The year is 20XX. All the old tracks have long since been retired from the rotation, and an F1 tire has not touched a blade of grass for decades. Drivers take flights exclusively between America and the Middle East to race on gauntlet after gauntlet of new carpark street tracks.

"Mecha-Alonso hustles his underperforming car around New York but it’s not enough to beat Robin Raikkonen. Ferrari blunder away pole due to a strategy error."

Another fan kept their message short and sweet and to the point, writing:

"Please stop."
"4 American races, three on the streets and Spain going onto the streets too, at night as well.

"Absolute joke. Sport is just a parody of itself now that has abandoned genuine motorsport and is just an Americanised gimmick."
"It's not the 4 races for me, hell, make it 6 if it's good tracks. It's the where that frustrates. You have Watkins Glen in the same state and I would have no issue with it being added. It's just the idea of another damn street track where it is destination first and racing second that is so disappointing."
