In recent statements, Fernando Alonso downplayed Lewis Hamilton's significant impact on Mercedes, attributing their domination largely to favourable regulations. The Aston Martin driver’s comments have raised eyebrows in the Formula 1 community.

Key Takeaways:

  • Fernando Alonso contests the popular narrative of drivers being pivotal to team development, emphasising instead the crucial role of timely regulatory changes.
  • Highlighting Lewis Hamilton's tenure at Mercedes, Alonso notes the dominance only commenced with a favourable change in the regulations, leading to eight constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles between 2014 and 2021.
  • The trend shifted with the introduction of ground effect rules in 2021, marking the rise of Red Bull's Max Verstappen and reinforcing Alonso's argument about the power of regulations.

Fernando Alonso has thrown a new perspective into the perpetual discussions surrounding the drivers' influence on team development in Formula 1. The two-time world champion questions the common assertion that drivers, such as Lewis Hamilton, are instrumental in sculpting the destiny of a team, particularly in light of Mercedes' dominance in the recent past.

Between 2014 and 2021, Mercedes, with Hamilton at the helm, amassed an impressive tally of titles. However, the introduction of the ground effect rules in 2021 witnessed a sea change, as Verstappen clinched the championship in the midst of a controversial Grand Prix win in Abu Dhabi. This trend was sustained in 2022, with Verstappen retaining the title and now eyeing his third this year.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Alonso elucidated his stance,

"I think this is something that is always said about drivers ‘building’ team, but when Lewis went to Mercedes [in 2013], he didn’t ‘build’ anything. It was just a change in regulations [in 2014] that built everything for him.

"And when Max joined Toro Rosso and Red Bull it was still Hamilton winning everything. He didn’t ‘build’ a winning Red Bull team. In 2021 it was very close between them, and now with the change in regulations last year, Red Bull win every race so far this season.

"So I don’t know exactly what we mean when we say you can ‘build’ teams around you because I think this is a sport where, you know, technical decisions, technical regulations, inspiration from the design office or wind tunnel or something like that normally makes more difference than your input, your feedback, your personality, or your way of driving.”

"Ultimately, you just need to be in the right place at the right moment.”

This year, Alonso's decision to switch to Aston Martin from Alpine has proven fruitful. The Spaniard, despite his brief hiatus, has managed to secure a commendable third position in the drivers' standings thus far.
