UPDATE: After more analysis, Aston Martin has admitted Fernando's car didn't have issues. You can read the full story here.

Fernando Alonso had a difficult start to the Canadian Grand Prix as the driver started from P2 but was quickly dispatched by Lewis Hamilton who started in P3 on the left side of the track. Fortunately for the Aston Martin driver, he was able to overtake the Brit with DRS and quickly started pushing for Max Verstappen. But an issue stopped him from pushing to the best of his ability.

Reflecting on the epic race between himself and his long-term rival, he said:

"We hoped to challenge Red Bull a bit more," he admitted. "At the start we lost a place to Hamilton. After that, it was a battle with Mercedes. Lewis pushed all race, so I couldn't relax a single lap. A great battle."

Continuing, he added that it was a tough race for him:

"At the start, I had a little more pace, and at the end, Lewis had a little more. It was tough, a demanding race. Seventy qualifying laps today!"

Fernando put up a brilliant fight against Hamilton as the 7-time champion did his best to catch the Spaniard. But he wasn't fast enough, finishing the Montreal race in P3. Max Verstappen finished in first place, but as the race came to an end, Alonso's engineer admitted that he could have caught him if he didn't have an issue with the car.

"Well done Fernando. We had to drive around a problem, but you did a great job. Without that problem, Verstappen would have...," said the Spaniard's engineer before Alonso cut him off with an acknowledging, "I know, I know! I didn't want to say it. Well done guys, I'm satisfied. We gave everything."

Alonso was questioned about the nature of the problem during post-race interviews, but even he didn't know what it was.

"I don't really know what the problem was. I wasn't told exactly, but maybe they didn't want me to worry! The car felt okay, but I just followed instructions.

"Hopefully, that means we have more pace up our sleeves, so the next race we will put the pressure on Verstappen."

According to pundits, the AMR23 had rear brake issues, although this hasn't been confirmed.
