In a bid to make the sport 'more exciting' for viewers, Formula 1 has introduced revised rules for tyre selection during qualifying at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola this weekend.

Under the new regulations, drivers will have a limited number of tyre sets and will be mandated to use specific compounds during each segment of qualifying. Currently, drivers have the freedom to choose any type of tyre compound they prefer, with most opting for the Soft rubber due to its immediate grip.

However, at Imola, things will be different. In the first segment of qualifying, known as Q1, drivers will be required to use the Hard tyres. Those who advance to Q2 will only be allowed to run on the Medium compound. Finally, the top 10 drivers who make it through to the pole position shootout will have the opportunity to use the Soft tyres.

The duration of the three segments in qualifying—18 minutes for Q1, 15 minutes for Q2, and 12 minutes for the final shootout—will remain unchanged.

Additionally, the total number of dry weather tyres allocated to each driver for the entire weekend will be reduced from 13 sets to 11. This allocation will consist of three sets of Hard tyres, four sets of Medium tyres, and four sets of Soft tyres for use during practice sessions, qualifying, and the race.

It is important to note that the allocation of Intermediate and Wet tyres remains unaffected by these changes.

The implementation of these revised tyre rules is expected to save two sets of tyres per car per weekend, amounting to a total of 46 sets over the course of a full season. With 20 cars on the grid, this would significantly reduce the need to manufacture and transport approximately 1,000 tyres worldwide. The initiative aligns with Pirelli's efforts to minimise its carbon footprint and promote sustainability within the sport.

By introducing stricter regulations on tyre usage and reducing the number of tyre sets required, Formula 1 aims to optimise resource utilisation, enhance competition, and contribute to a greener future for motorsport.
