Former F1 team owner and boss Giancarlo Minardi has spoken about how difficult Max Verstappen makes it for his teammates and claims that if the Dutch driver was taken out of the sport, Formula One would be much more interesting.

Verstappen is currently leading the drivers' championship with 314 points and a 125-point lead on his teammate Sergio Perez who is in second position. The significant lead which Verstappen has on Perez has sparked rumours of the Mexican driver losing his seat on the Red Bull team as he is unable to keep up in the same car. The rumours have made many question how difficult it is to be Verstappen's teammate.

Minardi formed the Minardi F1 team in 1985 which was later bought out by Red Bull in 2005 to become Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri).

During an interview with the La Repubblica newspaper, Minardi explained:

“In Belgium he put 22 seconds on [Sergio] Perez who races with the same car.

“He is easily beating Checo [Sergio Perez], as he did with all those other poor guys who found themselves in his team.

“Yes, the Red Bull is very powerful, but it’s his ability to drive it that makes it unbeatable. There’s him and then all the others who share the crumbs."

There have been many complaints from fans this year that the sport is becoming boring and predictable amid Red Bull's incredibly dominance having won all twelve races so far. Minardi goes on to argue that if Verstappen "didn't exist" the racing would be far more balanced and interesting for fans. He continued:

“If Max didn’t exist, F1 would be a more balanced and spectacular fight.”

F1 is currently on the summer break with racing resuming for Verstappen's home race, the Dutch Grand Prix, at the end of the month.
