The Mexican Grand Prix qualifying round saw Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, George Russell, and Fernando Alonso under scrutiny for various incidents, but all four drivers ultimately avoided penalties. The stewards prioritized safety in their decisions, opting for no further action to maintain grid positions and relieve the teams, despite the hectic review of numerous incidents.

Key Takeaways

  • No Penalties for Top Drivers: Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, George Russell, and Fernando Alonso have all avoided penalties after the stewards reviewed multiple incidents from the Mexican Grand Prix qualifying round.
  • Hamilton’s Close Call: Hamilton was under investigation for not slowing down during a yellow flag in Q1, but ultimately faced no penalty, maintaining his grid position and providing relief to Mercedes.
  • Safety Prioritised in Pit Lane: Verstappen, Russell, and Alonso were scrutinized for potentially impeding in the pit lane, but the stewards decided against penalties, emphasizing safety and the preference for creating gaps in the pit lane exit over the final sector.

The dust has settled after an eventful qualifying round at the Mexican Grand Prix, and despite initial concerns, top drivers Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, George Russell, and Fernando Alonso have managed to escape penalties. The stewards had a hectic time reviewing numerous incidents, but they ultimately decided against penalising these four racers. In the same breath, Logan Sargeant has received a penalty, as has the Williams team.

Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time World Champion, was under investigation for allegedly failing to slow down sufficiently during a yellow flag in Q1. Rookie Logan Sargeant was also under the microscope for the same reason and has been given a 10-place grid penalty. He will start P20. The decision to let Hamilton off the hook comes as a relief to his fans and the Mercedes team, ensuring his position on the grid remains unaffected.

Max Verstappen, the reigning 3-time World Champion, found himself under investigation for potentially impeding in the pit lane, a situation mirrored by his colleagues George Russell and Fernando Alonso. The stewards, after careful consideration, opted for no further action, citing the reason that creating gaps in the pit lane exit is preferable to doing so in the final sector, which they deemed more unsafe.

On top of this, Williams has been fined 20,000 Euros, 10,000 of which is suspended for a period of 12 months subject to there being no further breaches of the same article - leaving equipment unattended and in the way of Yuki Tsunoda.

This confirmation comes from the FIA who clarified that there would be no further action against Verstappen, Russell, Alonso, and Hamilton for the incidents in question. This news undoubtedly comes as a sigh of relief for the drivers and their respective teams, as any penalties could have had a significant impact on their positions and strategies for the race.

On a side note, Zhou Guanyu has been fined 500 Euros for speeding in the pitlane.
