F1 News: Lando Norris Disappointed At Qatar - "I Should Have Done More"

Lando Norris expressed a mixture of satisfaction and regret following his P3 finish at the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, highlighting his belief that he could have achieved more. The McLaren driver was candid about his frustrations, particularly regarding his pace and the team's strategy, which he felt hindered his potential to outperform teammate Oscar Piastri.

Key Takeaways

  • Norris's Mixed Emotions: Despite securing a podium finish, Lando Norris harbored frustrations and disappointments, believing his pace was superior and could have propelled him to a better position, potentially beating his teammate Oscar Piastri, who secured P2.
  • Team Strategy and Pace Dilemma: Norris questioned McLaren’s team orders to "hold position" during the race, expressing his belief over the team radio that he was "clearly a lot quicker" and could have capitalized on a significant gap. His struggles with "dirty air" and its impact on his pace were also a point of contention, despite acknowledging Piastri's commendable performance over the weekend.
  • Reflection on Inconsistency: In the press conference, Norris lamented missed opportunities and his own inconsistencies throughout the weekend, believing he should have contended for "two pole positions" and "potentially two victories." He acknowledged the potential for victories on both days and expressed frustration over the mistakes that thwarted these opportunities.

Norris, who showcased a commendable performance at the Losail Circuit, was visibly conflicted during the post-race press conference. His reflections were a blend of self-critique and acknowledgement of the difficulties he pushed through this weekend.

"My pace was definitely better," Norris stated, reflecting on his performance. "Whenever I got closer towards Oscar, the dirty air was quite a big struggle.

"Even with the back markers, you got within three seconds or something and you immediately lost time. Around a circuit where it's so much about load and these long corners, as soon as you have a bit of dirty air, it's a big struggle."

He continued:

"So, I think my pace was definitely a bit better, but it's hard to know. Oscar's done a very good job over the weekend. He's beaten me, and he's been extremely quick. He's made less mistakes and he's come out on top, so hats off to him."

Norris's disappointment was palpable, especially when discussing his own performance and the potential he saw for the weekend.

"I feel like I've missed out and didn't do what I should have done and achieve what I should have achieved. But I'm definitely so happy with the P3. I can't take anything away from that. But in the back of my head, I know I should have done more this weekend."

His reflections also touched on his own inconsistencies and the impact they had on his race weekend.

"If I want to be honest with myself, I should have fought for two pole positions this weekend and potentially two victories.

"I know it's a big thing to say, but I think things would have gone well if I just did a better job and didn't make the mistakes I did over the last two days, which is why I've been so frustrated because I knew what was on the cards, what we were able to potentially achieve, and that was victories both yesterday and today."

Concluded, he said:

"So I feel like it was a weekend of missed opportunities for myself to take the fight to Max and at least give ourselves that opportunity. So I don't know, there's good things and bad things."

I believe this might have been a small wake-up call for Lando, who has suddenly realised that Piastri isn't like his previous teammates. Hopefully, with that in mind, he'll come back stronger at Austin. But it must be noted how good a pairing of drivers McLaren actually have. They are both incredibly consistent, incredibly skilled, and both hitting for podiums. So yes, while the current landscape doesn't look overly kindly on Lando, the sun is shining on the team.
