F1 News: Lewis Hamilton Receives Most Controversial Penalty Yet - Belgian GP Sprint

Saturday's Belgian Grand Prix sprint bore witness to a collision caused by Lewis Hamilton according to the FIA, resulting in a five-second penalty. The event, which led to significant contact with Sergio Perez, with the Mexican eventually retiring from the race.
Hamilton had attempted an unconventional manoeuvre to overtake the Red Bull driver in the winding tarmac of Stavelot. In doing so, he collided with Perez's sidepod, leaving his car damaged, with the aftermath of this incident having a profound effect on the Red Bull driver.
Initially, he was sent cascading down the pecking order before ultimately, the Red Bull team decided to recall him to the pits indefinitely.
In another twist, the Mercedes driver fell several spots to P7 due to the resulting five-second penalty. He had been on the hunt, trailing Alpine's Pierre Gasly for a spot on the sprint podium, but finished in a reliable P4 position.
It's likely that Mercedes will appeal the punishment given to Hamilton, with many fans agreeing that it was an unfair penalty from the FIA for what was, in their view, a racing incident.
Hamilton's penalty seems harsh given the circumstances. Mercedes should take a page from Aston Martin’s book and present the stewards with other examples of 5-second penalties (and the collisions which led to them), to hold them to as consistent a standard as possible.
