Max Verstappen has joked about a new direction for the Red Bull team during the press conference after the Spanish Grand Prix qualifying this afternoon.

The Dutch driver took pole position for the race tomorrow after a dramatic qualifying session. When asked during the post-qualifying press conference what he thought of other teams beginning to adopt similar designs to the dominant RB19, Verstappen responded, jokingly:

"I think our next upgrade will be with no sidepods. Then everyone can go back to that."

Mercedes recently dropped their infamous zero sidepod design at the Monaco Grand Prix, a design which was an aid in numerous issues for the Brackley-based squad during 2022 and 2023 so far.

Fans were quick to react to the hilarious moment, with one claiming that Adrian Newey could probably make a zero sidepod design work. They commented:

"Newey could probably make it work Tbf"

Another fan commented that Verstappen probably felt under pressure from seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton today. The British driver was able to put in some great lap times taking provisional pole on a couple of occasions, although is starting from fifth tomorrow despite this. The fan wrote:

"By everyone he means Mercedes... he was panicking today with Hamilton back on his gearbox Tomorrow should be interesting"

Following Verstappen tomorrow is Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris who are starting from second and third place, respectively. With Pierre Gasly, George Russell, and Lewis Hamilton having been summoned to the stewards, there is a chance the line-up could change should any penalties be handed out.
