Mercedes, trailing behind dominant team Red Bull in the F1 2023 season, has acknowledged the flaws in its unique floor and sidepod concept. As a result, the team embarked on a significant revamp of its W14 car, targeting improvements in front suspension and handling to make it a more reliable drive for drivers George Russell and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

The eagerly awaited update arrives just in time for the first European race of the season at Imola. However, Russell emphasised that the transformed Mercedes won't result in an immediate leap forward. Instead, it aims to provide a more stable platform for development and enhanced performance in the future.

Speaking after finishing fourth in the Miami Grand Prix, ahead of his teammate Hamilton, Russell shared his thoughts on the upcoming changes:

"Imola is a fresh opportunity, and we'll have some new elements on the car. Hopefully, they will have a positive impact.

"Realistically, it won't drastically change our situation in the short term, but it's a step in the right direction."

He continued, emphasising the need for on-track performance to truly assess the effectiveness of the upgrades:

"Actions speak louder than words. We'll see how the upgrades perform once we hit the track.

"We're keeping our fingers crossed for great results, but that will only be evident on Friday morning."

Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes' trackside engineering director, shed light on the team's philosophy behind the Imola upgrades, stating:

"We hope that the updates will bring increased speed, improved qualifying and race pace. However, our primary goal extends beyond immediate lap time improvements.

"We are embarking on a different development direction that we believe will enhance our chances of competing for race wins and world championships in the long run."

He also revealed that the Imola package is just the first step, with further updates planned throughout the year as Mercedes seeks to regain its competitive edge.

As the Imola Grand Prix approaches, the Mercedes team is eager to witness the impact of their revamp on performance, hoping it will be the catalyst for a successful season ahead.
