Formula 1 is poised at the brink of a 'golden opportunity', according to Red Bull's Christian Horner. The influential team boss has called for careful consideration of the proposed rule changes set for the 2026 season, amid fears they might hamper the sport's ongoing expansion. Horner's comments come as Max Verstappen, Red Bull's leading Dutch driver, expressed concerns over the projected performance of the 2026 cars based on simulator sessions.

Debate has been building in recent weeks between Horner and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, regarding the proposed modifications. Wolff suggested that Horner's reservations might be driven by fear of Red Bull losing its current speed advantage, an accusation that Horner categorically denies. He emphasised to Sky Sports that his focus lies primarily on maintaining the sport's appeal to spectators in the future.

Horner voiced his views, stating:

"I think the more that we’re looking at these regulations, the more simulations, the more advanced those simulations are."

With a good two and a half years to go before the proposed rule changes take effect, Horner believes it would be unwise not to fully explore all possibilities, especially to avoid a scenario where we have race cars that can't actually race.

"I think the more that we’re looking at these regulations, the more simulations, the more advanced those simulations are," he admitted.

"We’re still two and a half years away from the introduction. For me, it would just seem a little foolhardy if we don’t explore all those. If there is a tune-up that we can do to just tune the ratio to ensure that we haven’t got cars that can’t race.

"I think with a very slight tweak, we can get it right, because there’s only certain circuits where it’s going to be a major factor.

"I think, for the benefit of the sport, and I think the FIA are actually taking it really seriously and the president has asked the technical team to come and have a look at some of the data.

"I think it’s important that we don’t get it wrong for 2026 because we’ve got a golden opportunity."
