F1 News: Toto Wolff Shatters Hopes For Monaco Mercedes Performance - "Won't Happen"

Mercedes is all geared up for the Monaco Grand Prix. But why is this exciting? They're about to reveal some major design tweaks to their W14, aimed at fixing the aerodynamic hiccups they've been experiencing. This is big news for the Silver Arrows.
Initially, the new design was to make its debut at Imola. But alas, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was called off thanks to extreme weather conditions, prompting Mercedes to postpone the big reveal to Monaco.
Unfortunately, even with this anticipation building up for the Brackley squad this weekend, team chief Toto Wolff has shared his thoughts and they're not overly optimistic. He believes that Lewis Hamilton and George Russell might not immediately leap to the front of the grid, challenging Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.
Wolff, during an interview with oe24, said:
"Of course, we would have liked to see how we were doing with the new car." He added, "When you completely revamp a car, you want to know what the upgrade package can do."
However, he was quick to point out that overtaking Red Bull might not happen immediately.
"Unfortunately, that won’t happen any time soon. But I’m hoping for a step forward," he said.
Explaining further, Wolff pointed out that Mercedes had to respond to Red Bull's upper hand. As he stated:
"We had to react to Red Bull’s superiority. Because we couldn’t find a solution to make the old car fast at the front or rear, we rebuilt the underbody, bodywork (e.g. side boxes, ed.) and front wheel suspension.
"There are no miracles in Formula 1. We won’t go half a second faster now, but hopefully, we’ll have fewer problems and can continue to work with a competitive car. So far it has been too stiff and stubborn.”
Despite having battled Red Bull in a few head-to-heads this year, Mercedes hasn't managed to topple the title leaders so far this season.
It's been a tough road so far, with Hamilton clinching only one podium in Melbourne, and Russell ending the Baku Sprint in fourth place.
Even with their imminent changes, Mercedes has a formidable challenge ahead. Red Bull already boasts a sizable lead in the Constructors’ Standings, with a comfortable 122-point gap over their closest competitor, Aston Martin, and a 128-point lead over Mercedes after only five rounds.
