Despite heavy rainfall leading up to the first day of the Japanese Grand Prix weekend in Suzuka, the session was able to get underway in dry conditions. A number of the drivers were running with a new Pirelli 2024 test tyre, including Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, and Carlos Sainz.

The Japanese Grand Prix weekend also saw the return of Aston Martin's Lance Stroll who suffered from a severe crash during the Singapore Grand Prix Qualifying which saw him withdraw from the race on Sunday.

Liam Lawson reported some light spots of rain, although this didn't become an issue for the session and didn't seem to worsen through the duration of the first practice.
