After a messy race start with collisions at the rear of the pack including Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton, a safety car was quickly put on the race due to debris on the track.

Logan Sargeant started the race from the pit lane and had been given a 10-second penalty before the race started due to the work done to the FW45 following his crash during qualifying yesterday. However, after being handed another 5-second penalty and sustaining more damage, the Williams team decided to retire Sargeant from the car.

Williams were later forced to also retire Alex Albon from the race. Other retirements came from Lance Stroll and Valtteri Bottas

A baffling moment came as Sergio Perez, who was also handed a 5-second penalty for overtaking when leaving the pit lane under the safety car, was forced to retire from the race due to damage sustained from the collision with Hamilton and later contact with Kevin Magnussen. However, Red Bull later decided to send the Mexican driver back out to serve the penalty to avoid it being carried over into the next race, even though he had already been declared as retired from the race. The FIA had confirmed to Sky Sports F1 that this was within regulations.
