Lewis Hamilton Reflects On Being Lapped By Rival Max Verstappen

The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix wasn't friendly to Lewis Hamilton as he and his Mercedes were lapped by race leader and rival Max Verstappen. Looking back at what happened, the 7-time world champion believes this "shows how wrong" Mercedes has got their 2022 car. To add insult to injury, team principal Toto Wolff has admitted that while the team still doesn't know how to fix it.

Hamilton has obviously found it very difficult to find any pace this season, with him not scoring any points during the last weekend of racing at Imola. But when Max Verstappen overtook him, this obviously struck the Brit hard. Then, rubbing salt into the wound, George Russell finished fourth compared to his 13th on the Sunday.

Lewis told the press the following after this massive blow:

"It just shows how wrong we got it."

On top of this, Hamilton also complained about the positioning of DRS and how his attempts at overtaking Piere Gasly were futile:

"This was a weekend to forget, that's for sure. Behind Gasly, we both had DRS so it was impossible to overtake, and I lost a few places in the pit stop. "

He continued, admitting that he's trying to be optimistic about his first race in Miami:

"This weekend, everything that could go wrong did go wrong. We live and we learn, and there's not much else to say. I'll keep working as hard as I can to try and pull it back together, somehow.

"I hope for a better weekend in Miami, it will be difficult but I'll try and get myself in a positive headspace for the next one."

Hamilton has plainly admitted that he is not fighting for a championship win this year. And currently sitting 7th in the driver standings, 58 points behind leader Charles Leclerc for Ferrari, I am inclined to agree with him.

George Russell sits fourth in the standings behind Sergio Perez, dragging Mercedes up to third in the constructor standings.
