Max Verstappen Snubs F1 Grid With Rival Statement Ahead Of Australian Grand Prix

The Australian Grand Prix is almost here and Max Verstappen is feeling confident ahead of the race. The Red Bull driver is currently leading the 2023 F1 season by one point, thanks to his impressive performance in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, where he drove from fifteenth to second place and secured the bonus point for the fastest lap on the final lap of the race.
However, Verstappen is not getting complacent and he believes that his teammate Sergio Perez is the only driver who can give him a run for his money at the upcoming Melbourne race.
The two-time champion is the clear favourite to win his third consecutive F1 title. But he is not taking anything for granted, especially with Perez in the same car and eager to challenge him. During an interview with Sky Italia, Verstappen explained:
"I think (Perez) is my only rival at the moment.
"We have the same car, so we can both do better. This might change during the season, but he's the only one who can give me a hard time during the race."
The Dutchman's comments come as no surprise, as the two Red Bull drivers have dominated the competition so far this season. They have taken turns finishing on the top step of the podium in the opening two races, with Verstappen winning the Bahrain Grand Prix and Perez winning the race in Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, bookmakers have Verstappen as the odds-on favourite to win the upcoming Australian Grand Prix, with Perez around the 9/2 mark and odds-on to finish on the podium. However, rain could play a factor in the race, as it disrupted the second practice session, with Fernando Alonso finishing on top ahead of Charles Leclerc and Verstappen in third.
Perez, on the other hand, is feeling confident ahead of the race and believes that he can compete for the championship this year, given the incredible performance of the Red Bull RB19 and the support of his team. Perez said:
"I’m very confident on the fact that we both have a car to fight for the title. I have my place and they respect me."
It remains to be seen whether Verstappen can continue his impressive form and win the Australian Grand Prix or whether Perez can pull off an upset and challenge him for the title. One thing is for sure, though: this promises to be an exciting race and F1 fans around the world will be eagerly watching to see what happens.
