Mercedes and George Russell have posted to social media to poke fun at having to return the third-place trophy for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix back to Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso.

The aftermath of the Jeddah race was chaotic with Alonso celebrating his 100th podium finish with race winner Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen who finished in second place, only to be handed a ten-second penalty afterwards.

The FIA and race stewards claimed the ten-second penalty was for not correctly serving a previous five-second penalty. However, the team appealed the decision afterwards as work did not start on the car before the five seconds was up, it was just the car was jacked up.

So, Alonso had celebrated third place, lost third place to George Russell, and then once Aston Martin's appeal was approved, was given third place back again.

Poking fun at the situation, Mercedes posted a video to social media of them delivery the trophy back to Aston Martin headquarters in Silverstone. They posted:

"Special delivery, @AstonMartinF1."

Fans are still recovering from the moment, with one commenting:

"Nicely done, but I kind of feel bad for Russel. Neither Alonso nor him were guilty, but it sure was an emotional rollercoaster for both of them."

Another fan commented, referring to the FIA blunder, writing:

"How the hell have you guys managed to make such great content out of an FIA mess-up!?"
