Mercedes has taken to social media to celebrate Lewis Hamilton's second-place podium finish at the Australian Grand Prix, but couldn't resist poking fun at the FIAs back and forth over Fernando Alonso's Saudi Arabia podium.

Fernando Alonso crossed the line in third place at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. However, following his podium celebrations, the Spanish driver was handed a ten-second penalty putting him into fourth place and Mercedes driver George Russell up into third.

The trophy was given to Russell only for it to be taken away again once Aston Martin appealed the penalty and Alonso's third-place finish was reinstated. Mercedes shared a hilarious video in the days after the race where a member of the team returned the trophy to the British team.

Taking to social media, the Brackley-based squad wrote about Hamilton's second place trophy, jokingly:

"We actually get to keep this one."

Fans were quick to comment, applauding the team for making light of the situation. One fan responded:

"And more to come. Also nice joke lmao" [sic]

However, many fans were criticising the team for not being there to celebrate with the seven-time champion for the podium presentation. Some fans commented, calling the team out:

"What a shameful thing to do to Lewis at the podium!! Where was the team support?"
"Next time be there to celebrate with Lewis!"
"Might wanna treat Lewis nicer so you can actually keep him too"

The Australian Grand Prix was chaotic throughout, but the drama continued after the race with fans storming the track and getting into the pit lane. Mercedes later confirmed that the majority of the team was unable to get to the podium presentation due to teams garages being looted by unruly fans.
