Sergio Perez has declared himself a worthy contender for the Formula One drivers' championship after triumphing over his Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. With each driver having won two races in the first four rounds of the season, the Austrian team has already taken a dominant lead in the championship.

Perez is currently six points behind Verstappen in the standings due to finishing only fifth in Australia, a race that Verstappen won after Perez faced issues in qualifying. Despite this setback, Perez is still confident in his abilities and aims to win the championship.

In an interview with Sky Sports F1, the Mexican driver stated:

"Having three kids at home, I wouldn't be travelling around the world if I didn't believe that I can be a world champion, and I'm working towards that.

"There is so much you can talk outside the car, it's important to deliver on the track, and I think without the issues we had in qualifying in Melbourne, we should be leading the championship.

"So definitely there is everything to believe that we can do well this year."

Perez has yet to win more than twice in a season, but he has had his best start to a season so far. Meanwhile, Verstappen is a 37-time winner and has raised his game this year.

"I am fighting for it," said Perez of the championship.

"But I also know it's a long road ahead."

Team boss Christian Horner praised Perez, stating that he had been "sensational" and "outstanding" in Azerbaijan.

"He absolutely excels here," added Horner. "He got a little lucky with the safety car today, but then he converted that and pulled a gap, and he had the pace and really controlled the race. A phenomenal drive by him all weekend."
