Toto Wolff Delivers Bad News For Mercedes F1 Fans As Rumours Squashed

After a challenging start to the 2023 Formula 1 season, Mercedes F1 team boss Toto Wolff has revealed arguably bad news as he dismissed rumours of Chief Technical Officer James Allison returning to the team. Amidst the team's disappointing performance and drivers expressing concerns over the W14 car, speculation has been rife about Allison's involvement in solving the issues. However, Wolff clarified that Allison's role within the team has not changed.
The Brackley-based team has had a less-than-ideal beginning to the season, with the W14 displaying a lack of top speed, an unstable rear end, and limited grip, on top of a poor seating position for 7-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. This has led to whispers that Allison, who stepped back from a day-to-day role in 2021 after his work on the likes of the W11, would be returning to a more hands-on role in order to address these concerns.
However, Toto Wolff, speaking to Autosport.com, has put these rumours to rest. He explained that Allison remains an essential part of the team's long-term strategy, while also participating in other boat-based projects such as INEOS' America's Cup sailing competition.
"He (Allison) is involved in the long-term strategy of the team. But he is doing more activities like America's Cup," Wolff told the media company.
Furthermore, a Mercedes spokesperson confirmed to GPBlog that Allison continues to lead the technical team, even attending the debrief after the Australian race.
"He is also attended races from time to time and will continue to do so."
Mercedes have no reason to confirm or deny these rumours, but fans still believe that Allison will make a comeback, especially after he did the last technical debrief on the team's YouTube channel. You can see it below:
