Kansas Volleyball Breaks Decade-Long Program Record in Win Over Texas Tech

The Kansas Jayhawks refuse to lose.
Following a sweep of Texas Tech on Sunday, the No. 19 women’s volleyball team broke the program record for most consecutive set wins at 24. The previous record was set a decade ago in 2016 with 21 consecutive set victories.

The Jayhawks are now 2-0 in Big 12 play and hold an overall record of 9-3.
During the sweep in Lubbock, Kansas out-hit the Red Raiders .427 to .209, with 51 kills. Reese Ptacek led the team with 14 kills, tied for the most this season, and added three blocks, while freshman Taylor Stanley added 12 kills and three blocks. That breaks Stanley’s 11-game streak of 15 kills or more.
Grace Nelson was dominant with seven kills and two aces, while Reese Messer had 33 assists and Olivia Hasbrook paced the team with 13 digs and six assists.

The win over Texas Tech came directly after the Jayhawks’ first sweep of the weekend over Houston, which opened up conference play. The team finished with 45 kills and hit .228, which was led by Stanley, who paced with 17 kills and six blocks. Ptacek had six kills, a match-high eight blocks, and two aces, while Logan Bell has six kills and two aces.
Messer led the Kansas offense with 35 assists and Hasbrook led with 13 digs and two aces.
The winning streak for the Jayhawks has not gone unnoticed by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and the Big 12 Conference. The program was handed several awards prior to the start of last week, as Stanley was named AVCA National Player of the Week, plus Big 12 Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week. She led the Jayhawks with 48 kills and 5.33 kills per set on a .456 attack percentage against Wichita State, Ole Miss and Grand Canyon.

Messer was also named to the Big 12 Starting Seven after averaging 13.17 assists per set in matches against Ole Miss and Grand Canyon.
The Jayhawks jumped up three spots to No. 19 in the latest edition of the AVCA poll released on Sept. 21, and it’s possible they shift even higher when the poll is updated this week. The only three losses for the Jayhawks this season came from two to open the season against Pitt and Stanford, and one against Florida State on Sept. 4. They continue conference play beginning Thursday against Utah, followed my BYU on Friday.
