Players Era Volleyball Showcase: Preview, Schedule and How to Watch

No. 1 Nebraska and No. 2 Texas headline the inaugural Players Era Volleyball Showcase in Las Vegas alongside No. 18 TCU and UNLV.

With tickets going for hundreds of dollars a pop, the Players Era Volleyball Showcase is one of the most anticipated events of the season.

No. 1 Nebraska, No. 2 Texas, No. 18 TCU, and UNLV are all competing in Las Vegas to secure early-season action as the nonconference season is in full swing. While some teams emerge from the first week of regular-season play, a few are just kicking off their season, while one is reevaluating its season strategy.

No. 1 Nebraska Cornhuskers

Although Nebraska's official record remains 0-0 entering Las Vegas, the Cornhuskers got their first look at outside competition Thursday night — and looked every bit like the nation's preseason No. 1.

Nebraska swept No. 17 Florida 21-19, 21-18 in the opening round of the Spikes Under the Lights exhibition at AT&T Stadium before facing No. 11 SMU.

The Cornhuskers didn't falter, cruising past the Mustangs 21-12, 21-11 to win the event.

While these matches do not count towards Nebraska's regular-season record, hence why the games ended after just two sets, the showing was a boost of confidence and reassured fans that Nebraska is a main contender this season.

The Cornhuskers went 33-1 in 2025 and entered the NCAA Tournament undefeated before their season ended in a five-set regional final loss to eventual national champion Texas A&M. They dropped just seven sets during the entire regular season and only one in Big Ten play.

Nebraska will face UNLV on Saturday before turning its attention to Texas.

The Sunday matchup will be the programs' first meeting since the Longhorns swept the Cornhuskers in the 2023 national championship match. Nebraska owns a 33-25 advantage in the all-time series, although Texas has won 12 of the last 16 meetings.

No. 18 TCU Horned Frogs

TCU will be thrown directly into the fire to begin its season.

The Horned Frogs' first official match of the 2026 season comes against No. 2 Texas on Saturday before they turn around to face UNLV on Sunday. TCU enters the year ranked No. 18 after posting its second consecutive 20-win season in 2025.

Expectations have continued to rise in Fort Worth, Texas, under head coach Jason Williams. TCU was picked second in the Big 12 preseason poll, trailing only defending conference champion Arizona State, and placed three players on the Preseason All-Big 12 team: fifth-year outside hitter Jalyn Gibson, junior outside hitter Evan Hendrix and senior outside hitter Becca Kelley.

Hendrix is the name to watch after a stellar 2025 campaign. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native earned third-team All-American honors after recording 543 kills, the 12th most nationally.

A win Saturday would carry some added weight. TCU has beaten Texas only once in 26 meetings, with its single victory coming in 2015.

UNLV Rebels

UNLV gets the benefit of playing in its own city this weekend, but the Rebels drew arguably the toughest possible opponent to begin their season.

The Rebels open against No. 1 Nebraska on Saturday before meeting TCU on Sunday.

Like TCU, UNLV has yet to play an official regular-season match, although the Rebels hosted Colorado State and Utah Tech earlier this month.

UNLV enters its fourth season under head coach Malia Shoji, looking to take a step forward after finishing 13-15 overall and 7-11 in Mountain West play last year. The Rebels were picked sixth in the conference's 2026 preseason poll.

Redshirt junior outside hitter Jaida Harris gives UNLV a centerpiece to build around. The Las Vegas native was selected as the Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year after earning conference Newcomer of the Year and All-Mountain West honors in 2025.

Harris finished last season with 370 kills and 214 digs, averaging 3.52 kills per set.

Saturday will be the first meeting between UNLV and Nebraska. The Rebels have considerably more history with their Sunday opponent, TCU, holding a 12-5 all-time advantage over the Horned Frogs.

No. 2 Texas Longhorns

Texas already has two matches under its belt, but the Longhorns' opening weekend left plenty to clean up before they take the court this weekend.

The Longhorns opened the season with a 3-1 loss to No. 12 Arizona State at the American Volleyball Coaches Association First Serve in Milwaukee, Wis.

Texas struggled offensively, hitting under .200 in all four sets. The Longhorns showed some life in the third set, winning 25-19, but the Sun Devils responded with a quick 25-18 fourth set to close the match.

Two days later, Texas needed all five sets to escape Marquette with its first victory of the season.

Senior outside hitter Torrey Stafford led the way with 19 kills and 11 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Cari Spears finished with 17 kills and seven digs.

One of the biggest disappointments to fans watching both matches was the sheer number of service errors Texas committed between the two matches. Against Arizona State, Texas registered 17 service errors, compared to the Sun Devils' eight. Against Marquette, it was 24 to seven.

The Longhorns have emphasized being aggressive, going for a very difficult top-spin serve, but it hasn't been paying off. Still, it's early in the season, and there's still time to master and tune up certain skills.
