'Six Rotations': Take Me Out to the Ballgame... An Unforgettable Week of Volleyball

History at Wrigley Field

For the second week in a row, women's college volleyball reached new heights.

After playing in an NFL stadium and an NHL arena, the sport checked off an MLB Stadium from the bucket list on Sunday as 43,067 fans packed Wrigley Field in Chicago. It was the highest-attended event since Jackie broke the color barrier and an incredible effort by the Big Ten Conference, the SEC, Wrigley Field, and FOX execs.

The historic stadium was absolutely alive, as No. 3 Kentucky and No. 12 Penn State put on a show in the first of two scheduled matches.

The start of the match was tight until Brooklyn DeLeye (21 kills, .319, 10 digs) flexed to close out sets one and two. Then the Nebraska and Texas transfer Whitney Lauenstein (13 kills) helped rally the Nittany Lions to force a fourth, a set the Wildcats dominated from the start.

Chicago Cubs fan Georgia Watson only played a few points in the match, but was able to cement her name into the record books with the match-winning kill.

What followed was unforgettable.

The crowd was filled with Big Red Nation and the Nebraska entrance was electric.

However, once the sun set, the court attracted moisture from the humidity in the air of the Windy City. It was apparent from the first point that the court was slippery, as Bergen Reilly and her entire team were slipping from the get-go.

Ultimately, after a delay and 18 total points, the court's stickers were stripped and every single student-athlete was on their hands and knees trying to dry the surface. At 11-7, another delay was needed, and ultimately the match was called off.

The camaraderie shown by the two teams will forever be remembered.

The fun that the fans had to have had, and the dance competition and karaoke that bled late into the night on FOX (!!) while the coaches, officials, and executives were trying to determine the next steps were more than memorable.

A rescheduled date and venue has not been announced yet.

The Week Ahead

The third week of the regular season features the annual ACC/SEC Challenge, named the Showdown at the Net presented by Shriners Children's Hospital.

This two-day event runs Tuesday and Wednesday and features four ranked vs. ranked matches on Wednesday.

History has been made each week of the 2026 season, and on Friday, we will see another historic college venue play host to No. 4 Stanford, which travels to Pennsylvania to take on No. 12 Penn State at The Palestra, an iconic venue in Philadelphia that is home to the Penn Quakers basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams.

The "Cathedral of College Basketball" celebrates its 100th birthday this year, and you can catch that match on the Big Ten Network at 6 p.m. ET on Friday.

In addition, Kentucky, Purdue, Houston, and SMU are participating in the Paradise Invitational at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar in Nassau, Bahamas, on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12-13.
