5-star wide receiver Mike Matthews sets July commitment date. What it means for Clemson.

Mike Matthews, one of the top wide receivers in the 2024 class, has announced when he'll commit. Where does Clemson stand?

Clemson already has one of the nation's top wideout commits in Bryant Wesco and is in the mix for another 5-star in Mike Matthews (Parkview, GA). News broke on Monday that Matthews, the No. 4 wide receiver in the country per 247's Composite Rankings, will announce his commitment on July 19th.

Player Profile: A two-way star, Mike Matthews could easily star at safety in the Power 5. At 6-foot-1, he has great length and speed, as he constantly separates from defenders and tracks down opponents. He can play inside or outside as a wideout and is a homerun threat every time he touches the ball.

What it means for Clemson: An early commitment date isn't the best news for the Tigers. It's long felt like this battle would come down to Tennessee and Clemson. With Matthews deciding to commit prior to Clemson's annual "All in cookout", it feels like he's leaning towards the Volunteers. Georgia and USC are both in the mix as well, but his last visit came at Tennessee in late June. Both On3 and 247 have Matthews as 100% to Tennessee. He may surprise everyone come Wednesday but this feels like a win for the Vols.
