BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. met with the media on Monday, following up on the big 35-0 win over Rutgers and looking ahead to Saturday's meeting on the road at Maryland.

Here are a few of the things he discussed in the video:

  • His connection with junior wide receiver Whop Philyor, who has had 24 catches in the past two games.
  • How he has been getting better in his reads and progressions, and how he's more comfortably even after only four games.
  • How winning on the road is all about execution and blocking out crowd noise, which he says isn't a problem for him.
  • How his veteran players have helped him get comfortable.
  • How he never focuses on cold weather and that he's been in Indiana long enough that it doesn't bother him.
  • How happy he was for Stevie Scott, who had a season-high for rushing yards.
  • How playing on the road is just all about continuing to make first downs.

Penix is a redshirt freshman from Tampa, Florida, and he beat out former starter Peyton Ramsey for the starting job in fall camp. He's played well, earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors in two of the four games he has started.

He missed two-plus games with a shoulder injury, but despite that, he ranks in the top 15 nationally in many passing categories.

He is 3-1 as a starter so far, with the only loss coming at Michigan State two weeks ago in Indiana's only Big Ten road. He played well that day too and had a lead in the fourth quarter. That was one of the two games were he earned Big Ten honors.
