Buckeyes React to Landing Caleb Downs: 'Made My Night!'

The Ohio State Buckeyes shocked the college football world on Friday when they landed Alabama defensive back transfer Caleb Downs. Seen by many as a lock to commit to the Georgia Bulldogs, Downs instead gave the Buckeyes arguably the best-available transfer in the portal.

Considering the hype surrounding Downs' decision, social media went wild with reactions, many from former or current Buckeyes.

New York Jets receiver and former Ohio State star Garrett Wilson said the news "made (his) night."

"Caleb downs! You made my night dawg. #GoBucks," Wilson tweeted.

Former Ohio State quarterback and popular college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit couldn't help but say "wow!"

"Wow!!" Herbstreit tweeted. "Caleb is super talented but what really stands out is his maturity and intelligence for such a young player. Walked in as a true Fr (freshman) last year and looked like he’d been there for years. Huge get for the Buckeyes."

Ohio State 2024 offensive tackle signee Deontae Armstrong reacted to Downs' commitment by hinting that the Buckeyes could have more roster moves in store.

"Crazy thing is we ain’t even done yet," Armstrong tweeted.

Downs is just one of many Alabama players to enter the portal after the retirement of Nick Saban but might be the best of that bunch. In his first collegiate season this past year, he posted 107 total tackles (70 solo), one forced fumble, three passes defended and two interceptions. He was also a threat on special teams with four punt returns for 87 yards and a touchdown, with this production coming exclusively on his 85-yard punt return for a score in Bama's win over Chattanooga.
