Pro Pokes: Former Oklahoma State Player Helps Texas Rangers Clinch Playoff Berth
The Texas Rangers are headed to postseason play, clinching their berth with one game remaining on their season. With a 90-71 record, the Rangers were helped to the postseason by Andrew Heaney, a former Oklahoma State baseball player.
Heaney pitched 4.1 innings for the Rangers. He pitched 51 strikes to his 85 pitches in the game. With two strikes and one walk, Heaney gave up five hits and no runs. The Rangers ended up winning 6-1 over the Seattle Mariners.
A strong third inning, which saw four runs for the Rangers, was a major turning point in the matchup.
The Oklahoma City native played three seasons in Stillwater. He started in 35 contests, playing in 51 different games in his career. He had a 20-10 record in those seasons. Just two years after his college career with the Cowboys came to a close, he broke into the big leagues. He's since appeared in 170 games in the MLB, with this being his first season with the Rangers.
"This team is resilient, these guys care, they put the work in and it's just a great feeling and we're not done yet," Heaney said after the win.
Later, Heaney showed why he's played a solid career and has been a good, winning teammate in that time.
"I'll do whatever the team needs. I got no ego. Just want to win games," Heaney continued.
Now, the former Cowboys could get an opportunity to pitch in a playoff game for the Rangers.
