Kenny Gajewski 'Unsure' But 'Excited' For New Season

Questions circle this Oklahoma State team, but the Cowgirl head coach is confident in his squad heading into the 2024 season.

Year nine kicks off for Oklahoma State head coach Kenny Gajewski on Thursday when OSU heads up to Northridge, Ca to take on Cal State Northridge.

"It's crazy to think that we've been here for nine years," Gajewski said. "Seems like it just keeps getting better as we go along."

Youth is the definition of this OSU team. Five seniors are on this year's squad, but only two of those players saw significant action last season.

One of the questions on this team is a major one; who is going to play? Gajewski said on Monday that the lineup will switch several times in these first few games, but he wants to find the best lineup before it hits the postseason.

"Early on, our lineup is going to shift a bunch," Gajewski said. "We may move people down or up even if they are going good or not; just to kind of see what is the best mix.

"I wanna be very good at the end. I'm not concerned with the start. Obviously, you want to win, but I wanna figure out what it is that will help us win in May and June."

Gajewski said it's going to be difficult to determine a lineup in these next several weeks, but it is a good problem to have.

"There are about 12 to 13 hitters that are showing us right now that they should be playing," Gajewski said. "It's our job to continue to walk them through our perspective and look through our lenses, so they understand why we are doing things."

While Gajewski is unsure about the offense, he is just as skeptical about who and where each player will be out on the field for the Cowgirls.

"I'm moving them around a lot because I'm trying to find what gives us the best chance to win," Gajewski said.  "In the fall, we were pretty consistent because we had an idea of what we wanted. When we got back, we decided we may need to see some other things first. Let's don't be reactive. Let's be proactive. The people we have out there are capable of being really good. Now it's just settling in."

Despite the youth and questions surrounding this OSU team, Gajewski is confident that the Cowgirls will achieve its goals this season.

"I think we can do anything we want to do," Gajewski said. "We don't have dysfunction. We have a lot of questions, but we don't have dysfunction. This team may love each other as well as any team we've ever had at this point."
