Penn State NCAA Football Win Total & Season Record Predictions & Odds

USATSI_20470111

The 2023-24 college football season is quickly approaching, and the Penn State Nittany Lions have high aspirations. The Nittany Lions had a promising season last year, starting 5-0 before falling 41-17 to #5 Michigan. However, QB Sean Clifford is no longer behind center, as coach James Franklin has yet to fully decide on a starting QB, but sophomore QB Drew Allar showed his potential last year and will likely be the starting in Week 1.

There are a few other changes to this Nittany Lions team from last year, but we think they’re in for a big season. Let’s dive into our Penn State predictions, which you can fade or follow if you join PointsBet Sportsbook before the college football season begins. All new PointsBet members can earn a $1,000 welcome bonus after activating a new account, which allows you to wager on the Penn State win total or any other betting market.

Penn State Nittany Lions NCAAF Season Record & Schedule Predictions

The first thing we looked at as part of our Penn State predictions is their schedule for the 2023-24 season, and they have an exciting opener as they’ll host West Virginia at Beaver Stadium for the first time since 1992. The entire Penn State schedule can be seen here:

  • West Virginia Virginia vs. Penn State - Saturday, Sep 2 at 7:30 PM ET
  • Delaware vs. Penn State - Saturday, Sep 9 at 12 PM ET
  • Penn State vs. Illinois - Saturday, Sep 16 at 12 PM ET
  • Iowa vs. Penn State - Saturday, Sep 23 at 7:30 PM ET
  • Penn State vs. Northwestern - Saturday, Sep 30 at TBD
  • UMass vs. Penn State - Saturday, Oct 14 at 3:30 PM ET
  • Penn State vs. Ohio State - Saturday, Oct 21 at TBD
  • Indiana vs. Penn State - Saturday, Oct 28 at TBD
  • Penn State vs. Maryland - Saturday, Nov 4 at TBD
  • Michigan vs. Penn State - Saturday, Nov 11 at 12 PM ET
  • Rutgers vs. Penn State - Saturday, Nov 18 at TBD
  • Penn State vs. Michigan State - Friday, Nov 24 at 7:30 PM ET

The Nittany Lions should be favored in their first six games before traveling to Ohio State, who are ranked #3 in the preseason AP Poll. Their only other contests against top-25 teams in the preseason AP Poll are versus #25 Iowa and #2 Michigan, which will occur in Happy Valley. Realistically, Penn State will be favored in 10 of their 12 contests if all goes to plan, and then it will come down to whether they can upset Ohio State and Michigan.

Penn State’s offense finished third in the Big Ten in scoring and yards in 2022-23, and although there will be a few new young faces in the mix, we think the Nittany Lions can be much more explosive. Allar has all the tools to take a leap, and WR KeAndre Lambert-Smith and Kent State transfer Dante Cephas will be his main deep weapons. Additionally, the running back trio of Nicholas Singleton (1,061 rushing yards and 12 TDs), Kaytron Allen (867 rushing yards and 10 TDs) and Minnesota transfer Trey Potts will be tough to slow down.

However, the biggest plus for the Nittany Lions this year will be their offensive line, and LT Olu Fashanu could be a top-five pick in next year’s NFL Draft if he plays to his full potential. The questions for Penn State begin on defense, as they lost S Ji’Ayir Brown and CB Joey Porter Jr., who were key to the Nittany Lions' success. Although both stars are now in the NFL, there are other players who are ready to step up.

CB Kalen King is back in the mix as an elite WR-stopper on one side of the ball, and safeties Jaylen Reed and Zakee Wheatley have the tools to be suitable replacements. The Nittany Lions defensive line should wreck opposing backfields yet again, and we expect Defensive Coordinator Manny Diaz to have his unit playing like one of the best in the Big Ten for the second year in a row.

Penn State Win Total & Win-Loss Record Predictions for 2023-24

When reviewing the Penn State win total, 10 wins seem like the Nittany Lions’ floor. Unless they lose a game that they’re favored in, they will be able to surpass 9.5 wins, so the best bet from our Penn State predictions is on Over 9.5 Wins (-150 at PointsBet). The next question for Franklin and his program is whether they can take a step in 2023-24 and pull off an upset against Ohio State, Michigan or both.

At some sportsbooks, the Nittany Lions are 10-point underdogs for their meeting at Ohio State and +2.5 underdogs at home against Michigan. Even if the Nittany Lions split those two games, they could still have a chance at making the Big Ten Championship or College Football Playoff. While this is unlikely, it’s worth putting a flier on Penn State to win the National Championship (+2000 at PointsBet), as PointsBet will give you bonus bets if your wager loses.

Additionally, this is the Nittany Lions’ best shot at making the CFP since they won the Big Ten Championship in 2016, and we have very high aspirations for PSU as part of our Penn State predictions.
