Virginia Softball Beats Radford 7-3 for Seventh-Straight Win

The Cavaliers took down the Highlanders on the road on Tuesday, moving to 11-4 on the season

UVA softball used a five-run third inning to secure a 7-3 win over its in-state opponent Radford on Tuesday evening. This game marked UVA’s seventh straight win, a positive streak of momentum to ride going into ACC play this weekend.

An infield single, a Cavalier throwing error, and a sacrifice fly allowed Radford to take a one-run lead in the first inning, but M.C. Eaton quickly tied the game with a solo home run leading off the second.

The third inning featured five hits and five runs, highlighted by a solo homer from Sarah Coon, an RBI double from Bella Cabral, a two-run single from Kelly Ayer, and a sacrifice fly by Leah Boggs.

In the circle, Julia Cuozzo pitched her two innings of work with one hit and one unearned run allowed, and Madi Harris came in to relieve her. After allowing two hits and an RBI groundout, Harris settled in to strike out the next five batters and cruised through another two innings on the mound.

Radford scored another run after a pitching change when Savanah Henley gave up a solo homer to the first batter she faced in the sixth inning, but like Madi Harris, she settled in and didn’t give up another hit. Kelsey Hackett provided an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI single, and then Henley retired the side in order to close out the Cavalier victory.

M.C. Eaton reached base three times with a single, home run, and a walk, and added one RBI and two runs to her solid offensive day. Kelly Ayer also had two hits and contributed two RBI.

Virginia will host Boston College for a three-game series on the opening weekend of conference play. The Hoos are projected to finish 9th out of 13 in the ACC, so Joanna Hardin’s team will aim to get some early conference wins. The series opens on Friday at 5pm at Palmer Park, with game 2 following Saturday at 1pm and game 3 concluding the series on Sunday at noon.
