In a battle between a pair of undefeated teams, the UVA pitching staff proved to be too much for the visiting Monarchs as No. 14 Virginia (4-0) shut down Old Dominion (3-1) 8-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Disharoon Park.

Sophomore righty Cullen McKay made his fourth career start on the mound and was superb, delivering 4.1 scoreless innings and striking out five batters in the process to earn the win. UVA’s bullpen took it from there, with Kevin Jaxel, Ryan Osinski, Owen Coady, and Chase Hungate combining to preserve the shutout.

Virginia got on the board on a solo home run from Harrison Didawick in the bottom of the second inning.

UVA doubled its lead in the next frame on an RBI double by Anthony Stephan. Virginia made it 3-0 in the fifth on an RBI single by Griff O’Ferrall, but the Cavaliers finally broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning, as Jacob Ference delivered an RBI single and Eric Becker brought in two runs on a base hit. Didawick tacked on another run for Virginia for good measure in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double down the left field line, punctuating the 8-0 win.

Up next, Virginia travels to Jacksonville this weekend for the Jax Baseball Classic. The Cavaliers will face Wichita State on Friday at 2pm, No. 18 Iowa on Saturday at 4pm, and Auburn on Sunday at 4pm.
