Murphy, who posted a 50-40-90 season in his lone year at Virginia before becoming the No. 17 overall pick of the New Orleans Pelicans in 2021, was one of the most improved players in the league in his second season in the NBA. After starting just one game as a rookie, Murphy started 65 of the 79 games in which he played in 2022-2023 and his minutes jumped from 13.9 to 31.0 per game. Murphy shot 48.4% from the floor (up from 39.4%), 40.6% from three (up from 38.2%), and averaged 14.5 points per game (up from 5.4). He also shot 90.5% from the free throw line, just barely missing out on joining the NBA's exclusive 50-40-90 club.

Murphy was also the runner-up in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, one of the more entertaining dunk contests in recent memory thanks largely to Murphy's creative dunks.

Trey Murphy III and the USA Select Team will train with the USA Men's National Team from August 3rd through 6th in Las Vegas to prepare for the 2023 FIBA Men's World Cup, which runs from August 25th through September 10th and will be hosted by Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
